The inhabitants, mostly Mayans, are very friendly, smiling and helpful.

The name of the island comes from the Mayan word “cuzamil” meaning island of swallows, because of the abundance of these birds at this time.

The ancient Mayans worshipped “Ix-Chel”, the goddess of the moon and of the fertility. They used to come in pilgrimage on this island from the whole empire.

Later, it became a shelter for pirates like Drake or Lafitte.

In the 1950s, Commander Jacques-Yves Cousteau dove the Palancar reefs and made the island famous among the world of passionate divers.
